Earlier this month, Google started to send out the first batch of invites to eager users of the company's Project Fi, Google's venture into the mobile carrier space.

The project aims to serve as a blueprint of how the Internet should be used on mobile devices. It isn't exactly a new carrier service but geared more toward an MVNO wireless type.

Project Fi's biggest selling feature is allowing customers who signed up for the project to pay only for what they use and customize the plan according to their needs with no hidden charges. A basic non-data plan will cost them a base amount of $20 per month, which stays the same no matter where they are located.

Customers can also add $10 for every GB of data that they use. If, for any reason, not all of the data are used at the end of the month, customers can get back the amount of that unused data. In other words, no data used, no money wasted.

As a result, Google received a tremendous number of invite requests from people who want to be part of the Project Fi's Early Access Program, even though Google has stated from the very beginning that customers would need a Nexus 6 device to join the project.

According to Google, the Nexus 6 is the first smartphone that will work with the company's network of networks. Those who already have their Nexus 6 and have, of course, received an invitation to the project can start jumping in. Others can order their device from Project Fi when they sign up for the invite request.

While a few lucky users already got a response to their invite requests, those who are still waiting to be responded to would just have to keep their hopes up at least until summer. Google promises to get to everyone's request as quickly as possible.

"We're sending invites as quickly as we can, while ensuring a high-quality experience," said the Project Fi team in an email. "Given the number of requests we've received, we currently estimate that it will take until mid-summer to get to everyone. In the coming weeks we'll have a way for you to check the status of your invite—stay tuned for more information. Thanks again for your interest in Project Fi. We'll get you an invite as soon as we can!"
