As E3 is preparing to get underway in Los Angeles, the biggest news is coming in rapid-fire from the gaming industry.

Amazon.com has unveiled the box art for Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, and while box art isn't exactly jaw-dropping news, anything related to mega-franchise Uncharted is kind of a big deal.

The artwork utilizes a promotional image of star Nathan Drake that's been used before, but the backdrop is now a dark, foreboding jungle. It's the kind of jungle you'd expect Darth Vader or Voldemort to come stalking out of.

It's a marked contrast from the box art of the first three games, each of which gave us images of Drake in bright, exciting locations. Drake is different as well. In the past, he's been standing tall, preparing to run off into adventure, or holding on for dear life.

Drake on Uncharted 4's cover is older, world-weary, and banged-up. This doesn't look like the wise-cracking adventurer we're used to. This is a "his darkest hour" cover.

The game's story finds Drake three years after we last left him, retired from tomb raiding and settled into a normal home life with his wife, Elena. But the sudden return of his long-believed-dead brother drives Drake back into adventure on a quest that developer Naughty Dog says will challenge him like never before and force him to make great sacrifices.

Sounds pretty dark to us.

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End is expected sometime in early 2016.
