Image Comics publishes a monthly title called Chew, about a detective with a bizarre ability. He's a "cibopath," meaning that when he eats something, he gets psychic readings about its history. Detective Tony Chu uses his ability to solve murders — and yeah, that means what you think it does.

Following a failed attempt to turn it into a live-action series for Showtime, a new plan was hatched to develop it into an animated feature film. The Walking Dead actor Steven Yeun stars as the main character, with The Guild's Felicia Day as his girlfriend, Amelia Mintz. Mintz has a unique ability of her own as well — she's a food critic who can write about food so perfectly that her writing causes readers to actually taste what she's writing about.

Just announced today, former Doctor Who star David Tennant has joined the voice cast as a character that was originally going to be portrayed by Robin Williams. Production was stalled when Williams took his own life last year, causing the filmmakers behind the movie to carefully consider how to proceed. The role in question is that of Mason Savoy, a fellow cibopath and Chu's mentor, who has a dark secret.

Chew's script was written by John Layman, who co-created the comic book with artist Rob Guillory. Jeff Krelitz is directing for Heavy Metal (it's not just a magazine anymore; it's moving now into multimedia production).

It's believed that Chew will be a direct-to-home-video release.
