Today, Bungie released new details and screenshots of "The Taken King," the Destiny expansion that comes out in September. These details focus on a particular setting of that downloadable content, the Dreadnaught, and includes images of what players can expect when their characters set foot there.

The Dreadnaught is a new environment being introduced with "The Taken King" and serves as the home of the Hive enemy. As expected, those purchasing "The Taken King" will get to wander the Dreadnaught as part of new missions, but also for public events and patrol missions, too.

So what's the story behind the Dreadnaught? Bungie asked Destiny game developers about it on their website. The Dreadnaught is the main setting for the story of "The Taken King," as well as for The Taken War that goes beyond that particular storyline.

"It was an incredibly fun challenge to find the right balance between a mysterious tomb ship and the flagship for the Taken fleet—to capture the idea of this unfathomable threat, a monstrous spaceship captained by the Taken King, yet filled with vast caverns and unknown passages," writes Destiny senior artist Andrew Hopps. "I can't wait for players to explore and discover all of its secrets."

Bungie mentions that a huge challenge in designing the Dreadnaught was that it needed to feel uninviting, while also being "a place people would want to visit and spend a lot of time exploring."

Bungie also introduced a new boss that players will encounter aboard the Dreadnaught: Darkblade.

"The Darkblade along with many other Hive abominations are waiting for you on board the Dreadnaught," writes Bungie on its website. "Oryx has built an army for them to lead, bristling with combatants that were taken from our world, twisted by the Darkness, and sent back to prevent you from looting their fortress."

"The Taken King" takes its throne on Sept. 15.
