Netflix is adding to its animated content by picking up an original Mr. Peabody and Sherman series from DreamWorks Animation.

Set to premiere on the streaming service in October, the Mr. Peabody and Sherman original series will be a reboot based on the four-minute shorts by animator Jay Ward that aired in the 1960s.

Mr. Peabody and Sherman, which aired as part of Ward's Rocky & Bullwinkle Show, follows the story of the world's smartest beagle named Mr. Peabody who adopts a human son named Sherman. The inventor/scientist canine creates a time machine for Sherman's birthday, which allows the two to go back and meet some of the most famous people in history.

The reboot will feature the two characters as hosts of a late night talk show that is based in Manhattan and filmed in front of a live studio audience. Of course, guests on the show will include historical figures they encounter through their time machine such as Mozart and Edgar Allan Poe.

"The New Mr. Peabody and Sherman Show is inspired by the original shorts and also weaves in elements from the film – they launch the TV variety show because at the end of the movie they're outed as time travelers, so they decide to capitalize on that," series' executive producer Dave Smith said. "We loved the straight-up lampooning of historical figures."We mixed it up a lot, while retaining the comedy of the Jay Ward show."

Chris Parnell (30 Rock, SNL) will voice Mr. Peabody, and Max Charles (American Sniper, The Amazing Spider-Man) will voice Sherman. Charles also played this character for the 2014 3D computer-animated film adaptation produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by 20th Century Fox. Mr. Peabody and Sherman is currently available to stream on Netflix.

Instead of using CGI, the Mr. Peabody and Sherman reboot will use 2D animation, and will be targeted for children ages eight to 12, as well adults who were fans of the original cartoon.

The New Mr. Peabody and Sherman Show will include 13 episodes in its first season, which is set to premiere on Oct. 9.
