That Android smartphone of yours can do so much more than just make calls and let you play Fallout Shelter.

Don't believe me? Head on over to Android Experiments and you'll quickly understand what I'm talking about.

Google launched Android Experiments Wednesday to show off all of the creative things that developers are doing with the Android operating system. There are 19 experiments featured in the gallery as of the time of this writing, all of which are open source and most of which are available for download from the Google Play store. Some of the current projects include a sleek, digital compass that points out nearby landmarks, a multiplayer handheld maze game and a 3D drawing app.

"Our hope is to encourage more developers to challenge how we interact with the devices we use every day," reads the gallery's description on the Android Experiments website.

Anyone can submit his or her own project through this form on the Android Experiments website as well. Experiments need to be able to run on Android 4.4 (KitKat) or higher, but they can be designed for specific devices.

Google is well known for showcasing the experimental projects developers create using its various apps, platforms and tools. The company previously launched a Chrome Experiments website, and Labs has long allowed Gmail users to try out experimental features in their email. Now, Android Experiments allows you to see these types of innovative creations right in the palm of your hand.
