After its release on both iOS and Android, Fallout Shelter quickly became one of the top mobile games on both the App Store and Google Play.

The game, which is sort of a cross between the Fallout video games and The Sims, quickly captured players' imaginations with its addictive gameplay and sardonic weirdness.

In fact, it's probably the mobile game's quirks that attracts players to it, including those not even familiar with the world of Fallout. However, there are enough in-jokes and references to that world that those who love the Fallout games get even more of an incentive to play it for hours and hours.

So what's it about? In Fallout Shelter, you take on duties as the caretaker of a vault, that place where survivors of the apocalypse can live, work and carry on their lives in safety. However, the more vault dwellers you have, the more resources you need, so you must constantly monitor resources - such as food, water and power - to make sure that all your dwellers are happy. Basically, gameplay is a lot like The Sims, but with a swath of dark humor over it.

But Fallout Shelter also has more wackier elements in its gameplay.

Pregnant Women Everywhere!

The Fallout universe takes place in an alternative universe where the apocalypse happened in the 1950s. That means that the 1950s idea of gender roles are also stuck, and about the only real purpose women have in the world is to get pregnant and have babies. This is evident in Fallout Shelter. Women can hold jobs within the vault, but their primary purpose is to have babies and create more little workers for the vault (although please note, that you can't put a baby or child to work).

So how do women in the game get pregnant? You put them in the room with a male and wait for the dialogue that indicates that there are sparks between the two dwellers (or in this case, little animated hearts). Then the couple runs off to the unseen bedroom, does their thing and then it's poof! instant pregnancy.

Also, for the record, you can put pregnant women to work in the vault.

Some...Odd...Dialogue

There's a lot of funny dialogue going on in the world of Fallout Shelter. Just check on any room where you have dwellers and they're probably having a conversation about something random (when they're not complaining that they feel sick or hate their lives).

There's also the funny journal entries from those you send out to the wasteland to gather resources and supplies.

Naming Conventions

In Fallout Shelter, you can name your characters. Obviously, this means that you can call them whatever you'd like. And if you'd like to see what funny names others are coming up with for their dwellers, here's a thread on Reddit about some of the more hilarious ideas for names.

Dying

Characters can die in Fallout Shelter, but it's kind of weird, because even if they're killed by a radroach infestation or Deathclaw, they still go out happy.

Radroaches, Deathclaws And Raiders, Oh My!

Of course, living in a vault is easy, so Bethesda decided to throw in a few extra challenges. Vaults can get overrun with Radroaches, as well as attacked by Deathclaws and Raiders. And that means that, sometimes, things get ugly.

RIP Vault 13:

So Fallout Shelter players, have you seen any weird and wacky events in your game?
