It's been just a few days since Sony launched its Xperia Z5 lineup of smartphones, and now the company has done something unexpected—it has slashed the price of the handsets by 20 percent.

Sony announced the launch of its Xperia Z5, Xperia Z5 Compact and Xperia Z5 Premium smartphones on Wednesday, Sept. 2, which it claims are "engineered to make everyday experiences better."

While the Japanese company did not divulge the pricing of the smartphones at the launch event, the smartphones hit the shelves in the UK on Sept. 3 sporting the price tags £549 ($844), £599 ($921) and £699 ($1,075) for the Xperia Z5 Compact, Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Premium, respectively.

This pricing was listed on Sony Mobile UK's official website for the off-contract models of the smartphones.

Here's a screenshot of the older pricing of the three next-gen Sony smartphones.

Now, however, it seems Sony Mobile has had a change of heart. It shaved off a good amount from the three smartphones' pricing since they are now retailing for the following prices on the UK website:

–The 4.6-inch Xperia Z5 Compact has been reduced to a mere £429 ($660), which is a reduction of £120.

–The 5.2-inch Xperia Z5 will now cost £549 ($844), which is a reduction of £50.

–The 5.5-inch Xperia Z5 Premium with the world's first-ever 4K display is £629 ($967), which is a reduction of £70.

Loyalists who preordered any of the three Sony smartphones immediately must be feeling letdown since the company, for some unknown reason, has reduced the prices.

A possibility exists that Sony was prompted to take this measure owing to weak first-day sales and in the face of stiff competition from devices from rivals Apple and Samsung.

Alternatively, the earlier price points could have been erroneously placed by the company. Either way, Sony should refund the difference to buyers who purchased the smartphone immediately when the preorders went live.

For those who want to take advantage of the price drop, preorder any of the Xperia Z5 smartphones online.
