To date, Nexus 6 is the only smartphone that officially supports Project Fi, the Google's MVNO phone service. However, reports indicating that Project Fi mostly (unofficially) works with Motorola's new Moto X Pure Edition spread like a wildfire

Google and Motorola have not yet pushed out any announcement on plans for the Moto X smartphone to officially support Fi. A blog post, however, reveals that Nexus 6 is no longer the only phone that's compatible with Project Fi, one can use the new Moto X on the Project Fi network as well.

Droid-Life on its blog post initially shared the news to the public.

"Yes, we decided to see if it would work. We took an unactivated Project Fi SIM and slapped it in a Moto X Pure Edition," reads the post. "Not only does it seem to be working, but I'm actually not running into any issues at all at this point."

To support the claim, it even uploaded a video showing that the Moto X Pure Edition, with the Project Fi application installed, can recognize the Project Fi SIM. The video showed that the SIM could be activated and be used without any trouble.

"I have found that I can make / receive calls, use LTE data, browse the web, listen to music, and chat with the crew on Hangouts," said the blog post. "This phone is capable of simultaneous voice and data, in certain situations."

Since the support is presently unofficial, reports say users can expect problems or limitations down the road.

While the Moto X Pure Edition is deemed as a U.S.-only smartphone at the moment, the device touts to support all major carriers out the box as it is an unlocked device. This is the reason why many reports point out that it is indeed an ideal candidate to become one of the official Project Fi smartphones. Additionally, the device is equipped with all of the hardware radio support on the Project Fi network.

Google's Project Fi is tagged as the tri-band voice and data service of the company where users pay only for what they use. In April, Google unwrapped the hotly anticipated Project Fi wireless service. The company claimed that it smoothly connects LTE networks and Wi-Fi with one another.

According to sources, Google will announce soon its two new Nexus smartphones. It is rumored that one smartphone is from LG and the larger phone is from Huawei.
