If you give fans the tools, you can expect them to do some truly astonishing work. We've seen tons of mods, videos and short-films come from fans using the Rockstar Editor video tools in Grand Theft Auto V on PC, and this latest video is just another reason to stand in awe of their creative prowess.

Take a look by watching the video below. If you weren't intimately familiar with the opening sequence for the first season of HBO's True Detective, you could be fooled into thinking that this GTA V-made version is the real deal. It's that spot-on.

Nearly shot-for-shot, the whole intro scene is here, the only exception being the scene at the 40 second mark. Video creator llachlann says they couldn't find a way to recreate that particular scene in the game, so it was substituted for another. Every image in the video is in-game footage aside from the film burns, film grain, fire elements and cloud footage. Adobe After Effects was used for compositing.

Somehow, the eerie mood of True Detective's intro works wonders within GTA V's dark and satirical version of modern Los Angeles. Also, Trevor is kind of a psychopath, so seeing his face appear with the moody music and creepy visuals does wonders.

Impressive, no? It's just another example of fans taking the tools they are given and shooting for the fences with some top-notch work. One modder recently crafted a DeLorean for use in the game that can actually travel through time. Fans imagined what Mario Kart might look like in Los Santos, with hilarious results. Finally, N.W.A.'s iconic "Straight Outta Compton" music video works perfectly in the gangster paradise of Grand Theft Auto.

It just goes to show that you should never underestimate the power of creativity. Grand Theft Auto V is about to get a whole lot more creative, too, thanks to developer Rockstar's decision to update the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of the game with the Rockstar Editor seen in the PC version. That means even more GTA V goodness to come, and that's a win for everybody.
