Benchmark testing by GeekBench has revealed Apple's custom A9 processor, which is used in the latest iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, is about 50 percent faster than its predecessor, the A8 processor.

The A9 processor carries a dual-core 1.8GHz CPU. The Apple processor achieved a single-core score of 2522 for both the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. The score is far higher in comparison to the test result of rivals. The Exynos 7420 processor found on the Galaxy S6 Edge achieved a single-core score of 1316 and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor that powers the Nexus 6 got a single-core score of 1081.

The iPhone 6 Plus, which includes the A8 processor, received a single-core score of 1605 on GeekBench. This reflects that the A9 processor is 57 percent faster than the A8 processor.

The GeekBench multi-core score of the iPhone 6s was 4403; for the iPhone 6s Plus, it was 4423. The iPhone 6 Plus achieved a multi-core score of 2876, which means that the A9 is 54 percent faster at multi-core operations.

Apple suggests that the A9 processor used in the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus is the most advanced chip ever used in a smartphone, and the GeekBench results back Apple's claim.

"The A9 chip brings a new level of performance and efficiency to iPhone 6s. Not only a faster experience, but a better one. The A9 chip is capable of gaming console-class graphics performance that makes games and other apps much richer and more immersive," stated Apple.

The A9 processor is the company's third-generation chip with 64-bit architecture.

CPU performance is enhanced by up to 70 percent from the previous generation, while graphics performance is 90 percent better, Apple claims.

It should also be noted that the iPhone 6 came with only 1GB of RAM, while the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus packs in 2GB of RAM.

Early adopters of the iPhone 6s have also praised that the new Touch ID on the smartphone is blazing fast.

Market analysts are predicting Apple iPhone sales during the opening weekend was between 13 million and 15 million units. GeekBench results on the speed of the handsets may tempt even more users to purchase the new iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus.
