There is an upcoming upgrade for the Qi wireless charging standards for Android, and it takes inspiration from Apple's famed MagSafe power delivery. This new wireless charging will be called "Qi2" and it will soon incorporate magnets to its surface so that it would lock into place, avoid disconnections, and charge a device more efficiently.

Apple is best known for its MagSafe since its early days with the Mac, with the feature first arriving on its charging ports for the computer, with the feature exclusive to them.

According to a press release by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), there will be a significant upgrade coming to future cable-free chargers, and this will be the Qi2 Wireless charging standard. It will undergo a rigorous change from its previous versions, and this time, it would center on the magnets to deliver power.

WPC was given the guidelines to create the right magnets to charge a device, courtesy of Apple, from its famed MagSafe chargers.

The new Qi2's core centers on the Magnetic Power Profile that would help in efficiently charging the device with its perfect alignment to its rechargeable batteries at the rear.

Android to Soon Have MagSafe Too?

WPC, being the world's organization for regulating wireless charging, ensures that the Qi2 will be available for all, and this includes Android devices that are wireless-capable.

According to 9to5 Google, this means that Apple's MagSafe is the new standard for future wireless charging, launching later this year for all compatible devices, with the likes of Android smartphones.

Apple's MagSafe

Apple enabled wireless charging for its tech releases, and it is famous for the iPhones, Apple Watches, and the AirPods with the applicable case. However, despite Apple's compatibility with the Qi wireless charging pads available in the market, it highly recommends the use of the MagSafe chargers for the iPhone that can output up to 15W fast charging.

It is an iconic technology for the device, especially as it snaps right at the back of the smartphone with ease, without worrying about disconnection when taking the device for use.

The Cupertino giant previously shared guidelines for creating MagSafe accessories so that it is fully compatible with its devices, for third-party manufacturers.

The Wireless Power Consortium is borrowing an idea from Apple with its update to the Qi charging standard that would be universally available to all. Since Apple only made it for its exclusive device lineup, others did not opt for this magnetic charging as it is not the Qi wireless standard before.

Soon, it would change for the better, to debut the Qi2's magnetic features even for Android.
