Apple sees speculation from different reports regarding its transition to USB-C, and it is finally switching its Lightning ports on the iPhone lineup, starting with next year's iPhone 15. The switch is due to the massive European Union (EU) regulation regarding the universal charging and data port for devices, or Cupertino would have to face a fine.

However, the problem now is that some accessories would still have to use the Lightning cable, particularly with this year's release of the AirPods Pro 2, and users would not be able to complete the transition to USB-C.

The iPhone 15 is finally switching to USB-C, and according to 9to5 Mac, next year's entire device lineup would feature the universal port to charge and transfer data for the smartphone. There are only a few left in the old technology of the Lightning cable, and it centers on the iPhone SEiPhone 14 lineup, as well as the previous generation iPad 9

Reports said that Apple's switch to USB-C should have been as early as now, especially as these regulations are already in place.

Moreover, it would leave behind some of this year's releases to still use the Lightning connectors for their charging and data transfer needs.

Hold on to Lightning Cables for Accessories

However, users may still have to hold on to their Lightning cables as there are some accessories and devices which still use the old Apple tech, including the AirPods Pro 2 that was released with the iPhone 14. Speculations look into a USB-C charging case transition for the Apple wireless earbuds next year, but users would have to pay an additional $79 for that.

Apple and its USB-C Transition

Apple has several devices now which are seeing USB-C support for charging and data transfers, which first started with the company's MacBook release in 2015 onwards. However, the MacBook also saw a transition from USB-C to MagSafe power adapters from its 2021 release of the 14-inch MacBook Pro, as well as 2022's MacBook Air M2.

It gets more confusing with the latest 2022 13-inch MacBook Pro M2 which still opts for the USB-C ports instead of the MagSafe chargers as seen from its previous releases.

On the other hand, this year's two iPad releases including the famed iPad Pro M2 features a USB-C charging and data port, also starting the transition for the iPad lineup.

The other device is the 2022 iPad classic or the tenth generation of the company's base product which features the A14 Bionic chip, also seeing USB-C ports.

It is a good thing that Apple's present and upcoming releases feature a USB-C charging port and adhere to EU's regulation regarding the transition for devices to the universal cable. Nevertheless, accessories like the AirPods Pro 2 would have to use the Lightning cables for now or use a wireless charger like the MagSafe Duo.
