An LG-made Google Nexus 5X apparently had a weird incident, heating up and melting itself, according to one Reddit user.

Google released its latest Nexus smartphones a few months ago, raising lots of interest worldwide. The company teamed up with LG and Huawei to launch not one, but two Nexus smartphones in one year, introducing the LG Nexus 5X and Huawei Nexus 6P.

Not long after the two devices went on sale, however, several reports started to emerge, revealing various issues with the handsets. While some Nexus 6P issues made the news, it appeared that the Nexus 5X had more problems.

Most Nexus 5X users complained about an upside down picture issue, hotspot problems, lagging and other performance lapses. Others also reported Nexus 5X throttling and RAM issues. Overall, the problems seemed to be annoying, but nothing too severe.

While all of the aforementioned issues caused quite a few headaches for Nexus 5X owners, none of them actually posed a safety risk or hinted at any serious manufacturing defect or major hardware flaw.

That may have changed, as a new issue has come to light and it's more troublesome. More specifically, a Reddit user has now revealed that his Nexus 5X "bricked and melted itself," and even posted an image to show the molten part of plastic on the back device.

According to the post on Reddit, the user had the Nexus 5X in a pocket and suddenly started feeling that the device was heating up. Confused, the user took the phone out of the pocket, and the device kept heating up even further.

"It then started to have a low frizzling sound and smelling extremely toxic. Then the entire phone became way to[o] hot for me to hold and [I] had to put it on the ground," the Reddit user explains. "When I picked it up again [I] noticed the hole/melted plastic pictured slightly above to the right of the LG Logo as pictured." (see image above)

The user points out that he only had the phone for 11 days, the device was not charging or plugged into anything when the incident occurred, and he only used the original Nexus 5X accessories, so no faulty third-party charger is to blame here.

It's worth pointing out that no other Nexus 5X overheating reports made the news so far, so it's likely that this is an isolated incident and not a widespread issue. The user should receive a new unit from LG, especially considering that he only had the Nexus 5X for a short while and didn't use third-party chargers, but we still don't know what caused the phone to melt like that.

LG has yet to comment on the matter or issue a statement to explain what might have happened, but one commenter on Reddit suggested that a faulty battery may have caused this incident.

This is not the first time we hear about overheating handsets that show damage, cause injuries or catch fire. Back in 2014, for instance, an iPhone caught fire in someone's pocket and the owner sustained burn injuries, while an LG G3 reportedly caught fire while charging. A number of other reports involving overheating phones and fire hazards surfaced over the years, although they all seemed like isolated incidents.
