The future of the Metal Gear Solid franchise is uncertain with creator Hideo Kojima no longer with Konami, but the past will always be cherished by fans of the franchise. Each and every entry in the long-running series is considered a classic, with the original Metal Gear Solid recently voted as the best PlayStation game of all time.

What would make one of the best PlayStation games of all time even better? Remaking the entire groundbreaking game in Unreal Engine 4. It's what one fan is doing as part of a project called Shadow Moses, and so far it looks incredible. The first trailer for the project released over the weekend. You can check it out at the bottom of this post.

"The first objective of this project was to recreate just the Shadow Moses environments and make a "museum game" to those who wanted to explore the base with current technology," creator Airam Hernandez says on the project's Facebook page. "My surprise was that after a few weeks, everybody was talking about it! So many online magazines started writing articles and I received a lot of messages offering help and support. That's the reason I decided to remake the entire game!"

As you might imagine, recreating the entire first game in the Metal Gear Solid franchise might rub Metal Gear owner Konami the wrong way. Every day fan projects are shut down by copyright holders in situations like this. After all, who is to say that Konami might one day make an official Metal Gear Solid remake of their own? Hernandez has already thought about this and has decided to let Konami in on the project from the get-go.

"Konami owns the MGS copyright and therefore sooner or later we will need their full permission," Hernandez says. "We have therefore chosen to openly share this project from the beginning so that we can deal with any issues that may arise as they come. We believe this is better than putting years of work into a project only to get it shut down."

Hopefully it never comes to that, but perhaps Hernandez being so open about the project and approaching Konami from the start will make a difference. For now fans can watch what Hernandez has accomplished so far and hope he is allowed to finish his work.
