The new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie might not be better when compared to the ones from the 80s, but that didn't stop fans from taking a trip to the theaters to see what it is all about. Apparently, the movie opened with a solid $65 million at the box office, successfully kicking Guardians of the Galaxy to the curb.

For a lot of people, this is a surprise as it was expected that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles would only manage to rake in around $40 million or $50 million. The main reason why the film has successfully surpassed expectations might have to do with the amount of longtime fans that have been waiting for a new turtle movie for quite some time.

Data showed that 55 percent of those who watched the movie were at least 25 years old; it also showed that the movie managed to bring in a diverse set of audience. Families really turned out to watch the new turtles in action, but whether or not they were disappointed as critics were is left to be seen.

"The X factor was that families turned out in a really big way," Megan Colligan, Paramount's president of domestic marketing and distribution, said Sunday. "Certainly with the hit [animated] TV show and a very popular property, kids were enthusiastic. The key for us was getting parents to be as enthusiastic. And they were."

At the moment, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has a rating of 19 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. However, such a poor showing did not stop Paramount from announcing a sequel that is expected to drop sometime in June, 2016. The studio is very optimistic, but let's just hope a better job is done with the second movie, because if not, chances are there won't be a third.

August has turned out to be a big month for movie goers and the box office. Guardians of the Galaxy kicked things off with an impressive $94 million outing, and now we have Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles keeping things positive with its $65 million outing.

Despite the impressive showing by the turtles, we're not so optimistic the movie will be able to hold the number one spot for long. We expect that by the end of the week, Guardians of the Galaxy will be back on top.
