The Origins Spectral Interpretation Resource Identification Security Regolith Explorer or OSIRIS-REx is set to fly to the asteroid Bennu this September. OSIRIS-REx will collect about 57 grams of space rock samples and fly them back to Earth in 2023.

Why stop there? The mission will also carry several works of arts on board. But we're not talking about works from Vincent van Gogh or Pablo Picasso, instead, a computer chip aboard the space vehicle will digitally carry works of new artists.

But why is NASA sending works of art into space?

"The development of the spacecraft and instruments has been a hugely creative process, where ultimately the canvas is the machined metal and composites preparing for launch in September. It is fitting that this endeavor can inspire the public to express their creativity to be carried by OSIRIS-REx into space," explained OSIRIS-REx project scientist Jason Dworkin from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland.

These artworks are not limited to just paintings. These can be a photograph, a sketch, a poem, a short video and even a song. Here's how you can send your submissions to NASA.

Who can join?

Anyone. Even minors, but they need to have permission from a parent or a guardian to join. All skill levels are welcome to send their submissions.

What can I send?

Any form of artistic or creative expression: photographs, poems, songs, short video, painting or others.

Why are you doing this?

See above quote from NASA's Jason Dworkin.

When can I sent it?

Any minute now. Deadline for submission is on March 20, 2016 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) or earlier. Once the drive's full capacity is reached, the submission window closes.

How do I send it?

Use social media. Post your submission on Twitter and tag @OSIRISREx. You can also post it on Instagram and tag @OSIRIS_REX. Make sure to use hashtag #WeTheExplorers on all your submissions.

All posts should be accessible at least until end of April. Moreover, make sure your submissions can be viewed without a password.

If you're planning to send a short video, you can either upload it directly on Twitter and Instagram or embed a Vimeo or YouTube link. For video submissions, the maximum length is two minutes and 30 seconds. Submissions uploaded on Vimeo should be downloadable.

What else should I know?

That's it, basically. Get creative! If you have questions, you can connect with the team at socialmedia@orex.lpl.arizona.edu.
