AT&T has announced that it will expand the coverage of its GigaPower service to Silicon Valley.

The company will soon bring its one gigabyte per second fiber service to Cupertino, California, the location of Apple's headquarters. It declined to give a specific timeline for the rollout, saying that it will make an announcement at a later date.

To prepare for the rollout, AT&T announced that it will deploy additional fiber and electronics to the Cupertino network. Currently, the company charges customers $70 per month for its GigaPower service. The price is similar to that of Google Fiber, which also offers network speeds of one gigabyte per second.

"AT&T has been bringing the latest, most advanced technology to our customers for well over a century, and today we continue that tradition by bringing AT&T GigaPower -the fastest broadband network available - to Cupertino," Ken McNeely, the President of AT&T California, said in a press release.

"The ultra-fast speeds of the AT&T GigaPower network open up a whole new world of possibilities for our customers in Cupertino. AT&T's network already serves as a backbone for innovation in California, and AT&T GigaPower represents a huge leap forward. From our wireless network to our broadband network, we are proud to empower entrepreneurs, developers, artists, and creative thinkers of every stripe to build and shape the future of California."

Last April, the company announced that it will expand coverage for its one gigabyte per second fiber service to 100 cities and municipalities around the country. AT&T said that it is considering other areas in San Jose for its GigaPower expansion.

The company named Campbell, San Jose and Mountain View, the location of Google headquarters, as candidate municipalities for its service. AT&T's expansion into California means that there will be strong competition between AT&T and Google in the Bay Area. Earlier this year, Google announced a contest to bring Google Fiber to 34 cities, including San Jose area Santa Clara, Mountain View, Sunnyvale and Palo Alto.

AT&T already offers its GigaPower service to customers in Dallas, Austin and Fort Worth in Texas. The company had earlier confirmed the expansion of its broadband network to Greensboro, Charlotte, Jacksonville, Houston, Nashville, Miami, Winston-Salem, San Antonio, Raleigh-Durham and Overland Park in Kansas.
