With 100 million daily active users, Snapchat continues to gain new users who can't wait to sign up to the platform to use the always-changing filters, follow their favorite celebrities and be able to send their friends disappearing photos and videos to share what's going on during their day.

After new users get the hang of the Snapchat basics, they will begin to see how addictive the app really is. With that said, it doesn't mean that newbie Snapchatters won't have a few questions along the way. For example, you might have noticed that, after adding a new contact, emojis appear to the right of their names. You might also have noticed that some accounts in Stories also have emojis next to their names. If you have wondered how these accounts get emojis, or what the purpose is behind them, we've got answers for you.

These are the real meanings behind Snapchat's emojis.

Contact Emojis

When users swipe to the left on the app, they will be able to see their Snapchat contact list. To the right of their names may be an emoji that ranges from a smiling face to the fire emoji. However, the first emoji that will come up is the baby. This means that the user just became friends with this person. The face with sunglasses emoji means that this user is one of your best friends. You both send a lot of snaps to each other in this balanced relationship. A smiling face emoji means that the user is a best friend — just not their number one. However, the user does send a lot of snaps to this contact.

Then, there is the smirking face that signifies that this user sends you a lot of snaps, but you don't send them as many back. Things get awkward with the grimacing face emoji, which means this user is also number one best friends with the person who is your number one best friend.

The yellow heart emoji means that the user and this contact are best friends with one another, both sending many snaps to each other. The red heart emoji means they have been number one best friends for two weeks, while the pink hearts means they have been number one best friends for two months straight.

The gold star means this contact must have a really good snap, because someone had replayed their snaps in the past 24 hours. The fire emoji means that you snapped this contact every day and they snapped you back. The 100 emoji will appear next to the fire emoji when this user snaps back with the user for 100 consecutive days.

Stories Emojis

Not every single user that appears in the Snapchat Stories page will feature an emoji next to their name. However, you have probably noticed the peach emoji next to Kim Kardashian, cake emoji next to Steve Aoki or cactus next to Jared Leto. That is because emojis here only appear next to a celebrity or public figure account. The point of the emoji is to reveal that this is their verified account, and it doesn't matter which emoji is used.
