Through a post on its Steam community page, Valve has released the computer-aided design files for the Steam Controller.

According to Valve, the release of the mechanical CAD geometry for the Steam Controller has the company looking forward to the accessories and variations that users can come up with using the files.

The released archive, which can be downloaded directly from the Steam community post, includes several eDrawings viewer files for compatibility with a wide range of design tools. Also included in the ZIP file and taking up almost half of its 800MB size is a 3D printer file for the Steam Controller.

The release of the CAD files was foreshadowed by Valve designer Erik Johnson, who said in October of last year that the Steam Controller that can be purchased by customers is not meant to be its final version. Valve was hoping that users would make customizations to the device depending on their needs and wants.

To initiate the sharing of alternative designs for the Steam Controller, Valve has also released variations to the Battery Door of the device that will allow users to carry their USB wireless receivers along with the Steam Controller.

The CAD files have been made available with Creative Commons licensing and contains the geometry of all the parts of the Steam Controller that are externally visible. This type of licensing will allow users to create and share as many variations as they could, though if they would be looking to see the customized Steam Controllers that they make, they would have to get in touch with Valve.

Valve has just recently pushed out a new beta update for its Steam Client that adds improvements to the Steam Controller, as well as to SteamVR.

For the Steam Controller, gamers will now be able to deploy A/B/X/Y and the Joystick Click as Mode Shift buttons. In addition, the Mode Shift feature received a fix that correctly clears it when users add it to several action sets.
