Mark April 13, 2016 as the day that the Heroes of Fable fought their last battle and lost.

The latest chapter in the RPG fantasy Fable franchise, Fable Legends, was officially canceled about a month ago, but the beta stayed up until this month, although now players attempting to log in will only see a goodbye message from Lionhead Studios, the game's developer.

"Fable Legends is no longer running," reads the game's login page. "All stories have to end eventually, but the memories of Heroic triumphs and Villainous Plots will last forever. Thank you for your support. You are all Legends."

Fable Legends took players back to the fantasy world of Albion, where they chose to play either a Hero or Villain. Co-op gameplay brought heroes together to save the world and villains together to destroy it.

Microsoft did announce, though, that the company will offer refunds to both Xbox and PC players who made Gold purchases during the beta of the multiplayer free-to-play game. Microsoft will send messages to players' Microsoft accounts once those refunds are ready.

Fable Legends was originally planned for a release in 2015, but that release got delayed until 2016. Last month, Microsoft - which acquired Fable developer Lionhead Studios in 2006 - decided to not only cancel the title, but also close the developer's doors. The closed beta began in 2014 and ran until today. The Fable franchise remained popular with gamers throughout the years, and Legends was one of those titles many players were most looking forward to. Microsoft closed Press Play Studios in Denmark at the same time.

"The Lionhead Studios team has delighted millions of fans with the Fable series over the past decade." wrote Microsoft last month on the Xbox blog. "These changes are taking effect as Microsoft Studios continues to focus its investment and development on the games and franchises that fans find most exciting and want to play."

After Microsoft's announcement about the closure of Lionhead, rumors began circulating that some of the developers on that team would continue working on Fable Legends as an independent title.

For now, though, the official word is that Fable Legends, and all of Fable, is dead. May all the Heroes of Albion rest in peace.
