Bastion and Transistor developer Supergiant Games has a third game called Pyre in the pipeline. It is scheduled to be released for PlayStation 4 and PC in 2017.

Supposedly set in a "vast and mystical purgatory," players will go on a journey to lead a "band of exiles to freedom through an ancient competition."

Not much is known about gameplay mechanics, but based on how developers describe the game and the released trailer, Pyre will feature a 2D action-adventure party-based RPG. Its "distinctive gameplay," which combines action-packed sequences against other rival groups and intuitive decision processes across a vast map is what players can expect from the game.

Players will not be completing their journey alone, because at the start of the game, Pyre reportedly has provided parties to accompany them through its richly detailed atmosphere and compelling storyline.

"We want to create a large cast of characters you can grow close to as you travel together across a strange and wondrous land," the developers write.

As players start the game, a band of "masked wanderers" revive the player's character from "the brink." It's revealed that this party of unlikely comrades, together with the player, will seek out information about an underground competition called "Rites" and later on, participate in duels against other exiles to absolve their transgressions and "return home."

Player's actions and decisions will shape the future of other characters within Pyre as they set out across the "Downside." It can be inferred that each playthrough of the game will result in varying experiences depending on what choices players make each time.

Interested players who want a taste of what Pyre has to offer can do so in the coming Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) East this weekend.

While the 2017 release may be a long wait, Supergiant Games has other titles available, from which Pyre took its gameplay inspiration from. Players can try out Bastion for its immersive lore and Transistor for its stunning visuals to get a feel of how the developers create their 2D action-based, adventure-narrative games.
