The 2016 model of the impending Samsung handset — the Galaxy J2 — has been rumored for a while now. Close on the heels of the specs of the Android-powered handset leaking a few weeks ago, the Galaxy J2 has now made an appearance on the FCC.

The FCC is the U.S. regulatory body that gives the green light for the release of any upcoming device. On May 13, the Samsung smartphone popped up on the FCC. The Galaxy J2's (2016) listing on the FCC is a clear indication as any that the smartphone is set to release soon in the U.S.

"Earlier today, an unannounced dual-SIM Galaxy-branded smartphone passed through the United States of America's official certification authority, the FCC. The handset was recorded carrying the model number SM-J210F," notes SamMobile.

The FCC listing mentions the model SM-J210F, and considering the Galaxy J2 model (which was released in 2015) had the model SM-J200F, SM-J200H or SM-J200Y — depending on the region it was meant for — it is indicative that the device in question is the Galaxy J2 2016 edition. Whether Samsung will also launch territory-specific alternate variants of the smartphone is unclear at this juncture.

The Galaxy J2 (2016) is the successor of the Galaxy J2 (2015), which was a mid-range offering from the company. While the FCC listing does not shed any light on the specs of the upcoming handset — apart from the battery size, which was not known earlier and is listed as 1,500 mAh — a previous leak gave us a peek into its specs.

Earlier in March, Samsung introduced its Galaxy J5 and the Galaxy J7 smartphones. With the FCC approval under its belt, the newest phone in the Galaxy J series from Samsung, such as the 2016 model of the Galaxy J2, seems poised to launch soon

Benchmark leaks have pointed to a 4.7-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels for the handset. It will reportedly house a Spreadtrum SC8830 quad-core processor clocked at 1.5 GHz and 2 GB of RAM. The on-board storage capacity will likely be 16 GB. It will also have a microSD card slot to support memory expansion.

The device will possibly tout an 8-megapixel primary camera as well as a 5-megapixel front-facing camera for selfie buffs. The Galaxy J2 2016 will come pre-loaded with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with Samsung's TouchWiz UI running on top.

It remains to be seen when Samsung will release the handset in the U.S.
