Microsoft has released a number of operating systems over the years, ranging from Windows 95 all the way to the upcoming Windows 10. Windows 93, however, wasn't one of them.

Yet here it is. It exists, like a ghost from a warped alternate dimension. Go ahead and explore it for yourself. Just click this link.

Hear that sound? It's the original PlayStation boot-up audio. It doesn't make a lick of sense, but that seems to be the entire point of Windows 93 -- nothing makes sense. There are a ton of files, shortcuts, and websites to explore via this virtual OS, and all of them are equally strange. You can play Solitude, which I'm assuming is like Solitaire but hiding some sinister purpose. You can watch Star Wars via text file. There are even completely functional programs like Paint.

You can explore websites via Windows 93's internet browser, Cat Explorer, using the Duck, Duck Go search engine. Or play a crude first-person shooter in the form of Arena 93. It's easy to get lost in this strange parallel universe. In some ways it feels like a time machine, as if Windows 93 is a portal back to the early 90s, but that isn't entirely accurate. Windows 93 is definitely aware of the modern day, as is evident by modern day memes and images featured throughout. What does it all mean!?

I have no idea, but making the entire experience especially eerie is the feeling that Windows 93 is always out to get you. Clicking on the "Poney Jockey" icon for example claims to open a portal to hell. That trustworthy dolphin down in the bottom left? Totally not trustworthy. It might be tempting to click on "Virtual Girl," but don't. She won't go away and she won't stop staring. Then there is Hydra.exe. Don't ever click "Hydra.exe." Unless you want to see what will happen. Then totally click "Hydra.exe."

Who knows what this is ultimately for, but it sure is a fun project that is easy to waste a good 10-15 minutes fiddling around with. Let's just hope that dolphin wasn't an actual virus. That would suck.
