Apple is adding its first third-party messenger to its automotive platform. WhatsApp latest update adds CarPlay support but the functionality is limited to in-car use.

The Apple Automotive platform is getting its first third-party messaging app with the addition of WhatsApp.

According to reports, the messengers latest update brings support for Apple’s CarPlay connectivity system. Before the 2.18.2 update, WhatsApp was only accessible using the iOS digital assistant Siri while in the vehicle.

The advantage of the new official CarPlay support allows users to receive their WhatsApp messages while driving. The app will automatically appear as one of the icons on the CarPlay dashboard.

How Will WhatsApp In CarPlay Work?

The CarPlay and WhatsApp update will allow Siri to notify users when they have a new message in the app. It will also offer to read it to the user so they won’t have to look at their phone and keep their eyes on the road. Users will also be able to send a message through WhatsApp by asking Siri to send one.

The users will be able to send the message talking to Siri and the digital assistant will recount the dictated message to confirm.

Apple already has a messaging system with the dedicated Messages app. With the feature, users can play audio iMessages and have their text messages read out loud. They can also compose messages using Siri. The biggest difference between the dedicated Messages app and WhatsApp is that the latter will not show or speak older messages. So, only new messages will be given to users in the car.

There will be no cost for the new feature as WhatsApp is a free download in the Apple App Store.
