Google announced via the Poly website that it would permanently shut down the Poly 3D platform soon on June 30, 2021, and advises users to download their library before leaving the servers completely. The three-year-old application is intended to create three-dimensional objects that can be used for AR or VR games using 3D technology.

Google Poly 3D Shutdown: Say Goodbye 'Forever' in June 2021

The world's largest internet company from Mountain View, California, Google, would soon shut down its Poly 3D platform from the web-based server to its users in seven (7) months. The online 3D creation tool that specializes in virtual reality, or VR, technology would soon cease to exist from Google's website.

According to Tech Crunch, users were updated by Google via email, saying that the company would close the online tool permanently from its servers. The slated shutdown would happen on June 30, 2021, which is more than seven months from today, giving users plenty of time to maximize work and download all outputs to one's local computer.

The shutdown would take place on June 30, but users would not upload 3D models or works to the platform by April 30, 2021. This decision would take a toll on users that mostly rely on the platform, particularly on game creation for the augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technology.

Google's Poly 3D was intended for the creators of virtual reality for a simpler tool to optimize VR games' content and output. The tool is one-of-a-kind as it belongs to a handful of tools available in the market dedicated to creating "low-poly" objects with particular in-VR tools from Google.

What is Google Poly 3D and Why Its Shutdown Would Impact VR Tech

The poly-object creator platform from Google was introduced last November 30, 2017, currently making it three years of age in terms of operations. The 3D developing website was created to provide aid and relief to the massively popular AR and VR technology that is most sought after tech in the present.

AR and VR are two of the world's preferred standards in design, presentations, industries, and the game landscape of the present times. The 3D medium gives an in-depth look and presentation to a certain object that can make or break a new product.

The revolutionary platform from Google is free to use, and even the outputs uploaded and created by its authors are available for the public to use. The CC license of the platform allows this possibility, provided that proper crediting and recognition are given to the creator.

Poly 3D is one of Google's existing AR and VR projects, widely available to the public. The company has shut down many of the same tools in recent years, with Poly following the trend. Poly's platform is more game and experience-oriented than the Tilt Brush and Adobe's Medium that leans more on the artistic side.
