AMD formally announced the arrival of their new mid-range Radeon RX 6600 XT, and it's looking good so far.

Team Red did the official reveal of the card in the unlikeliest of places: China's own version of Computex, the Entertainment Expo and Conference, or ChinaJoy. However, this didn't really take away from the great potential of the card itself, which Tom's Hardware reports could be the best GPU for silky-smooth 1080p gaming.

Here is the promo video of the card:

Official pricing is set at an MSRP of $379, which puts it in direct competition against NVIDIA's RTX 3060 Ti and 3060. According to AMD, the price is already adjusted based on what they thought people would see at retail stores. What this means is that fans can expect the AMD-set MSRP to be close to, if not match, the card's street pricing once it's officially launched.

The card itself has been rumored for several months now, and the MSRP is a bit different from the initial rumor of $349. Of course, people can expect higher prices on the actual market once the card releases, due to the markups by add-in board (AIB) partners and the general market conditions caused by the ongoing semiconductor shortage.

AMD will release the RX 6600 XT on August 11.

AMD RX 6600 XT: Specs Talk

Here's what's under the hood of the new mid-range Radeon from Team Red, writes PCGamer:

  • 2359 MHz Game (boost) clock

  • 2048 stream processors

  • 8GB GDDR6 memory at 16 Gbps

  • 256 GB/s memory bandwidth on 128-bit bus

  • 32 CUs

  • 32 Ray accelerators (aka ray-tracing cores)

  • 11.1 billion transistors

  • 160W TDP

  • Navi 23 GPU on TSMC 7nm process

From the specs alone, it might look like the RX 6600 XT isn't as impressive as the competing RTX 3060 or 3060 Ti. But according to AMD's tests, the card is powerful enough to deliver over 2.5x more performance at 1080p ultra settings compared to the current most popular GPU on Steam: the GTX 1060. Also, these specs are in-line with early rumors, confirming the leaks as accurate.

What this means is that AMD is directly marketing the 6600 XT to 1080p gamers who don't care much about high resolutions, but want a silky-smooth 60 FPS gameplay experience.

1080p: Dominant Res Will Serve as the 6600 XT's Playground

Say what you want about the 1440p and 4K capabilities of modern gaming hardware, but the truth is, high-resolution gaming is still more of a luxury. 1440p and 4K panels are still out of reach for most people. As such, they're still perfectly fine with their Full HD 1080p monitors, which is the resolution that the 6600 XT targets.

1080p also remains the most dominant display resolution, according to the latest Steam Hardware Survey. Over 68% of gamers game on this resolution, and the furthest they often go are multi-monitor 3840x01080. Again, this is right within the RX 6600 XT's wheelhouse.
