PS5 overheating issues can hit anybody who owns Sony's current-generation console, especially now that the system has been out for over a year. It would certainly be a bad thing for your console to overheat now, especially since it's the holidays, and you'd likely want to play as much as possible.

Fortunately, it is quite easy to tell if your PlayStation 5 is overheating, as per Asurion. Here are the most obvious warning signs:

  • Your console will flash a warning that says, "Your PS5 is too hot." At times, this warning will also be followed by a sudden shutdown. If the console shuts down almost immediately after this warning, then your problem is far more serious than normal.

  • The PS5's cooling fan is way too loud as if it's like a mini jet engine turbine.

  • Games are suffering from major performance issues like low frame rates and slow loading times due to the hardware being stressed out by the heat.

  • Graphical artifacts in the form of white or black dots appear on your screen, or maybe the screen suddenly turns white, purple, black, or green while you're playing.

If you notice that these issues have been persisting for a while, then your PS5 is indeed overheating. If so, then it's a good thing that some of the fixes are quite simple to perform.

PS5 Overheating Fix

An overheating PlayStation 5 console can be more or less fixed with a quick cleanup, as per ITechPost. The main reason why this fix tends to be effective is because it clears out any dust or grime buildup on the console's ventilation holes, which allows it to pull cool air in and push hot air out.

How To Prevent Your PlayStation 5 From Overheating

The old medical adage "Prevention is better than cure" also applies to electronics-at times even perfectly. The same rings true for your current-gen Sony console.

Preventing your PS5 from overheating is as simple as placing it in the right spot, according to TheGamer. Take note of these tips and take them to heart:

  • Give it some room to breathe by placing it at least 4 inches away from a wall.

  • NEVER place your console on a rug or carpet that has long fibers.

  • NEVER place your console somewhere cramped with barely any room to move.

  • NEVER cover your system with a cloth, ESPECIALLY if you're using it. Only do that when it's not powered up.

  • Place your console away from the floor as much as possible to prevent dust buildup. Dust is heavier than air, so it settles down close to the floor. By keeping it raised, you prevent your console from soaking up all that dirt.

The PlayStation 5 is a marvel of gaming engineering. The least thing you could do for it is keep it running nice and cool so it will continue to serve you well for the entire gaming generation.
