An APK teardown of Google Calendar suggests big changes are coming. With this, a new version of the app may remove Assistant Reminders from Calendar. Instead, users will be alerted with "Reminders are now Tasks."

BERLIN, GERMANY - JUNE 09: A wooden Google logo hangs at a stand at the 2022 Re:publica digital society festival on June 09, 2022 in Berlin, Germany. The three-day event brings together stakeholders and leading voices from a wide spectrum of today's global, digital society.

A new alert would further explain the change: "Use Tasks to get notified about your to-dos and keep track of them wherever you are in Google Workspace."

On that note, Google will transfer current reminders to the new Tasks protocol. Then, when users create a reminder, the Tasks service will take its place.

Still, everything is hypothetical right now. One thing's for sure, Google has removed the Reminders service from Assistant.

Currently, Tasks support are in Calendar; however, once this update is ready, it will be the only way to access reminders along with meetings and appointments.

What's Happening?

One thing to remember is that this isn't the first thing that will go because users will also lose access to location and assigned reminders. Moreover, Google Calendar will also direct users to find any of their existing entries in Keep, and not Assistant anymore.

It's still unclear whether a merge between Keep and Assistant Reminders will happen or if this only means that the tech giant is only downplaying the existence of Assistant Reminders.

Additionally, Google is really cleaning up its duplicate apps-just recently, they confirmed it was combining Duo into Meet

On the topic of merging apps, though, Google recently announced that their Meet and Duo apps would be merged into a new app called Meet. This new video chatting app will replace Duo, which means that Duo users will need to download Meet to continue using the video chat features.

The reason for this consolidation is that Google is moving away from confusion and simplification. The new app will link to Duo's existing features and bring in all users that have been using Duo in Google Meet. In addition, Google Chrome will also now have the Meet app built-in.

The Calendar update should roll out in version 2022.24.0.x.

Google Apps Experience Shakedowns

Google has been streamlining its services. And it seems the company continuously wants to simplify the structure of its applications and services.

These continuous updates may also signal more updates coming soon. It is known that Google Apps have been cluttered over the years, and now the tech giant is being more proactive in delivering a better user experience.

What's Next?

Currently, users have access to many different apps under the Google umbrella. For example, there's the Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Calendar, Sites, and Tasks apps. It's true that many of these applications have different purposes and features, but it's not clear if the company will change its strategy.

So far, the tech giant hasn't confirmed any changes at the time of writing.
