Because of its efficiency, the U.S. government is spending millions of dollars just to implement the use of ankle trackers.
But, have you ever wondered where the idea of prisoner ankle monitors came from? Well, a New Mexico judge shared his inspiration in using this tech approach to keep criminals in check.
Prisoner Ankle Monitors Inspired by 'The Amazing Spider-Man'?
According to Gizmodo's latest report, New Mexico Judge Jack Love said that "The Amazing Spider-Man" inspired him to implement ankle monitors.

He referred to Stan Lee's popular hero comics, which gained traction in the late 1970s.
The official explained that the comics inspired him to approach experts that could help them produce these tracking devices.
Because of this, the New Mexico judge became one of the first judges to mandate wearable monitors.
He and Michael Goss, the Colorado engineer that helped him produce the prisoner ankle monitors, called these tracking devices electronic handcuffs.
But, the tracking device received its official name, "Goss-Link." This ankle monitor was based on the tracking device that Spider-Man was forced to wear by Kingpin in the iconic comics.
However, unlike the technology shown in the graphic book, Judge Love said there were several problems initially.
"There were bugs and gremlins and glitches in the system and the equipment. However, it was like the Wright brothers getting off the ground," said the New Mexico official.
Importance of Ankle Monitors
In 2021, NBC News reported that the ankle monitors greatly helped the U.S. government during the start of the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Authorities allowed some criminals only to have house arrests since their locations are still monitored using the devices.
