More TikTok Users Are Getting Their News from the Video App

As per the latest news by Tech Crunch, it turns out that a growing number of TikTok users now admit that they do get their news from the Chinese social media platform.

A new study from the Pew Research Center finds that more and more Americans are using TikTok to get updated with the latest happenings in the country and various parts of the world.

In fact, the Pew Research Center study finds that roughly 22% more users are getting their news stories from the video-sharing app compared to the figures two years ago or in 2020.

And this time, the research shows that around 33% of TikTok users in the US are using social media app to get updated with the latest news.

The latest figures on TikTok news consumption are pretty alarming if the recent research report from NewsGuard is to be taken at face value.

A recent report by CNN notes that NewsGuard researchers have discovered that about 20% of the videos in the search results of TikTok are carrying some misinformation. It includes sensitive topics, such as the COVID-19 vaccines and the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg speaks about the new Facebook News feature at the Paley Center For Media on October 25, 2019 in New York City. Facebook News, which will appear in a new dedicated section on the Facebook app, will offer stories from a mix of publications, including The New York Times.

For instance, Facebook, which had around 54% of its users consuming news on the platform back in 2020, now only has 44% of its users.

While TikTok is seeing increasing numbers, Twitter and YouTube news consumption is declining.

Roughly 59% of Twitter users got their news from the social network in 2020. But in 2022, it is down to 53%. Meanwhile, YouTube saw a slight decline from 32% in 2020 to 30% this year.

But interestingly, more Twitch users are getting their news from the video streaming platform. In 2020, roughly 11% of its users consumed news stories from the platform. This year, it is up by 2%.

Tech Crunch notes in its report that the latest news consumption figures on TikTok hint that the app goes beyond entertainment videos like Bella Porch lip syncs. It has been the go-to platform for its users to get the latest updates.
