Duolingo, the popular language-learning app, has launched Duolingo Max, a new subscription tier that includes a virtual language tutor powered by the recently released GPT-4 AI model, TechRadar reports.

The virtual tutor has two features: Explain My Answer and Roleplay, both of which seek to improve language learning outcomes by simulating real-world situations and conversations.

Explain My Answer and Roleplay

Users now have the ability to ask the chatbot Duo to provide a detailed explanation of why their answer was correct or incorrect by using the newest 'Explain My Answer' feature.

In comparison, the newly-added Roleplay feature enables users to have realistic conversations with the AI, with the chatbot providing feedback on the accuracy and complexity of the user's responses as well as providing suggestions for how to improve future conversations.

Duolingo Max Subscription

Duolingo writes in a blog post that the AI tutor is currently only available in Spanish or French for English speakers on iOS, but that the company hopes to expand to additional languages, interfaces, and platforms in the coming months.

Duolingo Max is initially accessible in the United States, Great Britain, Ireland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

The Duolingo Max subscription costs $29.99 per month or $167.99 per year and provides access to unlimited hearts for courses, the removal of ads, and personalized review via the Practice Hub. After each 'Explain My Answer' session, users can utilize the thumbs-up or thumbs-down emoji to give the AI feedback.
