Based on a Comicbook.com report, Amazon will be axing its Comixology applications, completely merging the popular digital comic book distributor and reading application to Kindle, a similar Amazon application housing thousands of electronic books and novels.

The reports follow after users of Comixology received an email notifying them of the merge to be implemented by December 4, 2023. The merger will see the Comixology application no longer usable by December across iOS, Android, and Fire OS platforms.

Amazon says they've been "upgrading the Kindle app to deliver the great digital comics, graphic novels, and manga experience," similar to what consumers have become acclimated to in Comixology.

Based on the official news release of Comixology posted on X, users' libraries on the Kindle app will now contain novels they previously bought on the Comixology app. Users may instantly access their comics, graphic novels, and manga by selecting "Comics & Manga" from the Kindle app's filter menu to find their comics archive.

Comixology Unlimited users can still check out new comics from the vast collection available on the Kindle app.

Aside from these changes, the report also states that the Kindle app will allow users to hide and unhide individual comics, graphic novels, and manga in their collection. Titles already set to conceal using the Comixology app will immediately be hidden in the Kindle app.

Amazon Slammed by Comixology Users

Users reportedly slammed the merge, with one user saying, "I just don't understand. Who at Amazon thought it made sense to merge two entirely different mediums as though they were the same?"

Another user highlighted the merger's positive side by noting that "this looks terrible on the surface but because they stopped updating the comixology app a while ago, Kindle's actually a little better for reading comics now..."

Another reportedly posted, "This is awful news. It's been nothing but deterioration of the [comoxilogy app] since it was bought by [Amazon]."

The Comixology to Kindle transition has already been reviewed by Geekwire, wherein the writer says their Comixology library's novels all seem to have made it through the switch to Kindle, and the image quality is "okay."

However, as of the report's posting date,, the reporter notes that it still does not seem like a user can purchase comics through the Kindle app directly, and the sidebar's "Comixology Unlimited" option "is broken."

Amazon's Comixology Acquisition

IGN reports that since Comixology was acquired by Amazon in 2014, the digital comics platform has seen various users criticizing its new, confusing user interface on social media after the site released several contentious upgrades. The Comixology website's general style has changed the most, or rather, it hasn't changed at all. Comixology Version 4.0 replaced the platform's website with the Amazon.com marketplace, offering consumers minimal help accessing the material in their comic book collection.

IGN also reports how Comixology further received backlash since Amazon's acquisition, with its redesigned interface lacking features like zooming and its known Guided View function, formerly a "signature" function of the Comixology reader.

Comixology's updates also saw users outside of the United States and the United Kingdom severely harmed by the app's accessibility and being forced to use the Amazon shop to make purchases.

Comixology's more recent update that its users, specifically Android users slammed, was when Comicbook.com reported that due to changes in Google Play Store policy, Amazon had eliminated in-app transactions for Android users. As a result, Android users may no longer purchase comic books, graphic novels, manga, or ComiXology Unlimited subscriptions.
