If you have an AirPods Pro 2 with the old Lightning cable charging case, Apple is now offering you a chance to change it to USB-C, with the case-only offer now available via the stores. As part of Apple's commitment to its USB-C transition, it introduced an updated AirPods Pro 2 alongside the iPhone 15's release, with both devices now equipped with Type-C ports for charging and data connection.

The latest offer in Apple's online shop now brings over a MagSafe Charging Case (USB-C) for AirPods Pro (2nd Generation), and it does not have the earbuds available.

This is because this was meant as Apple's upgrade to the previously-released AirPods Pro 2, centering on a case that features a USB-C charging port.

Apple's separate offer of the MagSafe Charging Case with USB-C only is available for $99, and it is significantly cheaper than buying a new set of wireless audio devices. Moreover, this is meant for the earlier owners of the AirPods Pro 2nd Generation who were given the case with Lightning ports, especially as the company is transitioning to universal charging use.

Should You Buy the AirPods Pro 2 USB-C Case?

There are plenty of factors to consider for this upgrade, and one of the top is if you own various USB-C cables already for other devices like the iPhone 15, iPad, Mac, or Android devices. Getting a USB-C charging case could help eliminate the need to use Lightning cables, with one less item to bring or keep at home.

Apple also offers an extra USB-C charging cable in the box.

However, if you still have various Lightning port-equipped devices, then it is not necessary to get this. Note that Lightning cables are nearing their end with Apple's current transition.

Apple's Transition to USB-C Ports

One of the top upgrades made by Apple to its devices is the USB-C change, and while this is no longer new, this 2023 release which debuted in September was the first for the iPhone lineup. This year's iPhone 15 series featured a significant upgrade to USB-C, and it brought all models to equip this universal charging port, after many years of snubbing it.

However, Apple did not stop there.

After the renowned Fall event, Apple went on to deliver a new AirPods Pro 2 with a USB-C charging case but did not deliver any changes for the audio wearable.

Furthermore, Apple also updated the wired earphones, the EarPods, with a USB-C connector for its use with the latest iPhone 15 lineup.

While many expected a massive AirPods Pro upgrade, possibly the 3rd generation, the best they got was the USB-C transition which offered the previously updated device. Now, for users who still have the case with the Lightning ports, Apple is offering an upgrade that will turn it into a MagSafe Charging Case with USB-C, with the old earbuds fitting it, as long as it is the AirPods Pro 2nd Generation.
