There was a lot of hope for last year's Ascension. It looked to be a grand return to true science fiction for the SyFy channel, a three-night event that, if successful, might pave the way for a full-blown Ascension series, just like Battlestar Galactica did before it.

Our own Robin Burks enjoyed the series quite a bit, even if the gigantic twist at the end of Ascension's first episode threw some viewers for a loop. Perhaps too many viewers, as SyFy has now confirmed that Ascension will not be getting the full-series treatment.

This is what a SyFy spokesperson told Deadline about the future of the show:

"We were very happy with Ascension as an event series, but with so much high profile development in the works, we have decided not to pursue a full series."

Bummer. Ascension managed to bring in 1.8 million viewers when it premiered last year, but it doesn't sound like those numbers were enough to justify further expanding upon Ascension's ideas. The event series ended with a number of unanswered questions, questions that will have to remain unanswered for now.

Actor Gil Bellows, who plays Harris Enzmann on the show, is doing his part to try and get SyFy to reconsider Ascension's future.

It is certainly possible that with enough vocal fan support, SyFy might give Ascension a second chance at life. We've seen it happen with beloved shows in the past. For now, however, fans will just have to look up to the stars and hope.
