DC Comics is revisiting the Caped Crusader circa the 1990s, and a Batman writer from the '90s is back to help. Specifically, DC has decided to return to the time period of the celebrated storyline known as Knightfall, the tale that saw Bane break Batman's back (and inspired parts of the movie The Dark Knight Rises).

A big part of that story depicted a paraplegic Bruce Wayne pass the mantle of Batman on to a protege named Jean-Paul Valley. After Bruce's inevitable return to the cowl some time later, Valley would go on to be known as the vigilante Azrael. In one of DC's many two-part Convergence titles releasing throughout the months of April and May, readers will get to return to this time period, after Bruce's back had healed but he was still recovering.

It's called Convergence: Shadow of the Bat, and it's written by Larry Hama, who wrote for Legends of the Dark Knight, Shadow of the Bat and storylines including No Man's Land and Toyman. The first issue sends Batman on an undercover case to infiltrate Gotham's organized crime, but when he's given an initiation test, the man he's ordered to fight is Azrael.

Issue #2 finds Batman and Azrael team up against a new threat that comes in the form of Wetworks, a team of superpowered black ops agents from the Wildstorm universe. Specifically, the original Wetworks team, which incidentally saw publication around the same time as Knightfall. The original Wetworks team consisted of Blackbird, Claymore, Crossbones, Dozer, Flattop, Grail, Jester, Mother-One, Pilgrim and team leader Dane.

Convergence: Shadow of the Bat #1 goes on sale April 15, followed by #2 on May 13.
