Microsoft owns Bing, which explains why the company is pushing it as the main search engine on the Edge browser. Cortana, its personal assistant, is also powered by Bing.

Microsoft's personal assistant appears on the Windows 10 desktop as a search box in the task bar. When Cortana is asked about a certain information, it searches for the answer using Bing instead of other search engines such as Google.

However, Google remains the preferred search engine of the majority of users. Some users who want to use Google or other search engines such as DuckDuckGo or Yahoo have felt a little annoyed at Microsoft's constant pushing for them to continue using Bing.

Developers have somehow found a way for users to set Google as their default search engine on Edge. There are at least six steps needed to achieve this.

1. Launch Microsoft Edge to view the Edge icon on the taskbar.

2. Navigate to Google by typing "Google.com" in the URL box. The page should load fully before going to the next step.

3. Choose "Settings" in the dropdown menu by clicking or tapping the trio of ellipses found on the upper right corner of the page.

4. Scroll down the settings menu until you see the button that says, "View advanced settings," which you should then click afterwards.

5. Continue to scroll down until you see the words, "Search in the address bar with." In the selection field, choose the "Add new" option.

6. At this point, you should be able to view Google.com under the list that says "Choose One."

By being able to choose Google.com from the list, you have successfully added and set Google as the default search engine.

The steps involved in "forcing" Cortana to use Google as a default search engine are, of course, different.

1. Make sure that Google Chrome has been downloaded on your PC and has been made your default browser.

2. Install a Chrome extension that will allow your Bing searches to be redirected to another search engine.

Some of the extensions you can use are Bing2Google if you want to use Google solely, and Chrometana, which you can use for Google, DuckDuckGo and Yahoo.

Once the extension has been installed, any searches done on Bing will be redirected to your preferred search engine with the same terms used in the search. This means that even if you are on Bing.com and you enter a search word, you will get the results on Google, or your preferred search engine.
