To commemorate the Star Wars: Battlefront first anniversary, Electronic Arts is going to release the Rogue One: Scarif expansion on Dec. 6. It is the fourth and final expansion to the popular title and is available to those who own a season pass.

True to its roots, Rogue One: Scarif is inspired by another Star Wars film, the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The film also got a December release as it is slated to open in U.S. theaters on Dec. 16.

Final Battlefront Expansion

"In Rogue One: Scarif you'll battle across four new maps, including the sandy beaches of Scarif — an all-new tropical planet crawling with Imperials — which should look mighty familiar to anyone who saw the movie trailer," EA said in an official statement.

To those wondering about the titular Scarif, EA points us to the location in the expansion's promotional trailer (see below) where the AT-ACT is marching through the waves. This map is only one of the four available in the expansion.

New Playable Heroes

Now, the massive new update will have players filling the shoes of two new playable protagonists, Jyn Erso and Orson Krennic. So far no gameplay video has leaked so it is difficult to determine their skills and game styles. However, they are the lead heroes in the upcoming Star Wars film.

Now, this is a possible spoiler since it is still not confirmed. But if you are planning to watch Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, then proceed with caution.

Jyn Erso is widely speculated to be Rey's mother. The Star Wars databank, however, did not refer to this connection whatsoever.

"Putting behind a checkered past by lending her skills to a greater cause, Jyn Erso is impetuous, defiant, and eager to bring the battle to the Empire," the description stated. "Used to operating alone, she finds higher purpose by taking on a desperate mission for the Rebel Alliance."

Aside from the new heroes and maps, the Rogue expansion also features a new battle mode. Here, space and ground fights are integrated into a multi-stage skirmish.

X-Wing VR Mission

EA is also launching a separate VR content for the PlayStation VR called Star Wars: Battlefront Rogue One: X-Wing VR Mission. Using your VR headgear, you can pilot an X-Wing in the virtual space. The experience puts the player in the middle of a mission for the Rebellion. The title, therefore, is not all about piloting around aimlessly since the player will effectively be starring in a dedicated Star Wars plot.

The game is free for those who own the PlayStation VR.
