There is no denying that the Amazon Echo has dominated as the top product of 2017, especially during the holiday season.

This usually shows by the number of sales for the device, but Amazon does not divulge such information. So what we have to go off is the downloads for the companion Amazon Alexa App, which users can only download if they have an Echo device.

The numbers are in, and the Alexa app is cleaning up in the app stores. Reports say the app has reached 10 million downloads in the Google Play Store. According to AppBrain, it took from November 2014 to May 2017 for the Alexa app to reach 5 million and then double in just seven months.

What this means is that 10 million users have downloaded the Amazon Alexa app on Android, and these users all own an Echo device. The downloaders could potentially own more than one Echo device or maybe not even have a device but is joining an existing device.

Whatever the case may be, this points to a plethora of people using the Amazon smart home speaker.

Amazon said that the Echo Dot was the number 1 selling Amazon Device this holiday season. The company further went on to say it is "the best-selling product from any manufacturer in any category across all of Amazon," with millions of Echo Dots sold.

Amazon On iOS

Earlier this week, reports surfaced that the Amazon Alexa app on the App Store has reached an all-time high.

Just days after Christmas, the Amazon Alexa App earned the number 1 spot on App Store under the Top Free Apps list.

According to MacRumors, data gathered from Sensor Tower's App Store analytics show just how the Alexa app climbed to the top spot. The analytics show that the app started climbing the Free United States iOS App chart in the days leading up to Christmas and then peaked at number 1 on Dec. 25 and Dec. 26.

On Christmas Day, the app also hit the top spot in app stores around the world, including Great Britain, Germany, and Austria.

This is the first time Amazon's Alexa app gained the top spot on the iOS store. Today, the app is still in Apple's top 10 free apps, having moved down to the number 8 spot.

Why Do You Need The App?

For Alexa device owners, the free Amazon Alexa App is a companion to your Alexa device for setup. You also get remote control and enhanced features.

While the Alexa device is always ready to play your favorite music and provide weather information and news updates, the app lets user tell the device where to pull the information or content from. So if you want to only hear music from Pandora or Spotify, then you'd set that up through the Amazon Alexa app.

The Amazon Alexa app is free to download on the App Store, Google Play Store, and Amazon Appstore.
