Samsung could be bringing back familiar names with the release of its forthcoming Galaxy S10 flagship. History time: The last time Samsung ever released an "Edge" version was in 2016. Back then, customers could pick between the regular flat-paneled Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge, whose screen tapers to the side to achieve a bezel-less effect.

That disappeared when the Galaxy S8 came out. Though customers still had two options to choose from — the regular model or the larger Galaxy S8 Plus — those who'd rather stick with flat screens were left out entirely. That's because both versions of the Galaxy S8 came with the Infinity Display, an innovative new screen that saw even less bezels on Samsung's premium flagships.

A flat screen option was subsequently absent from the Galaxy S9. However, rumors say Samsung would be offering three versions of the Galaxy S10 next year — and at least one would have a flat panel.

Galaxy S10 Variants

Instead of just two Galaxy S10 with Infinity Displays, Samsung would be releasing a more Lite phone that features a flat display. Because of which, the "Edge" branding would apparently make a return.

The rumored lineup includes the Galaxy S10 Lite, the Galaxy S10 Edge, and the Galaxy S10 Plus, according to Mobile Fun, a mobile accessory provider. The branding makes plenty of sense. Calling the flat Galaxy S10 just "Galaxy S10" would probably only confuse customers. On the other hand, "Lite" would demonstrate unambiguously that it's lower-tier than the other two options.

Fourth Galaxy S10 Coming?

Apart from those rumored three, speculation also suggests that Samsung is going to release a fourth Galaxy S10 variant, one that supports 5G connectivity. Both Verizon and AT&T have practically confirmed this, having announced earlier this month that they've partnered with Samsung to bring a 5G-capable Galaxy smartphone in the first half of 2019.

5G is poised to be the next big thing in smartphones, reported to reach speeds that are up to 100 times faster than the current 4G LTE standard.

"Together with Samsung, we plan to bring the best in technology and innovation to our customers. The future we imagine with 5G is just beginning, and it is a great time to be a consumer," said AT&T executive David Christopher.

Both carriers failed to specify which phone this is, though. As such, it's entirely possible for Samsung to create a 5G phone outside of the S or Note line altogether.
