Google Assistant’s new feature lets members of a group leave assigned reminders to each other. The feature is designed for families and housemates to better collaborate with each other.

Assignable Reminders

On Thursday, Aug. 15, Google announced a new feature set to roll out on Google Assistant that can potentially help households to be more productive and collaborative. Soon, members of a group can leave assigned reminders for each other using the Google Assistant whether at home or on the go.

For instance, one can simply say “OK Google, remind Jeff to walk the dog” or something with a more specific time and location such as “go to the grocery at 3 p.m.” or “get coffee beans at Starbucks,” and the reminder’s recipient will receive that message on their phone at the specific time or when the Assistant recognizes that he or she is already at that location.

Apart from reminding others of tasks, this feature can also be used to send encouraging messages to members, such as “OK Google, remind Abed that he will do great on his Spanish exam” and the reminder will be sent to that person.

Google Family Group

To be able to use this feature, members must be a part of the family group on Google’s Family website, and only those who accepted the invitation will be able to use the feature and receive the reminders. Users can only send and receive reminders within those in their Google family group or those whose accounts are linked to the same smart display or speaker.

For now, the feature will only be released in English in the United States, UK, and Australia in the next few weeks on phones, smart displays, and smart speakers with Google Assistant.

“We think this feature will be a great tool to help families (and housemates) manage tasks this new school year and beyond,” said Glenn Wilson, Group Product Manager for Google Assistant.
