Sony has recently updated the PlayStation 5 in secret, and it adds a nifty feature that should have been with the console since its release, and it is called the "HDMI Link" which pairs up the PS5 and television. There were no exact reasons as to why Sony did not announce the update, but it is surely something that would be of use to PS5 owners.

Most people have not yet received the gaming console and the updates for the PS5 have been going on a steady stream to bring the different improvements for a handful of its users that already has it. Sony has stated that the console would be coming at a steady pace during this period and in the coming months, as production continues to be on the regular.

The most coveted gaming consoles of the generation are battled out by the Sony PlayStation 5 and Microsoft Xbox Series X, as both devices have been seeing a shortage in manufacturing due to chip shortage. People who want the latest consoles from both companies would have to wait for supply drops from their official stores or retail partners.

According to Kotaku, Sony has released a handful of updates for the PlayStation 5 earlier today, and it brings significant improvements for the console's performance and different aspects. Apart from the HDR optimization and 120Hz support for its display, Sony has "snuck in" several improvements like the HDMI Link for the console.

While the HDMI Link was something already familiar for the users of the past consoles like the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, along with the different versions of both aforementioned gaming devices. This is a nifty feature for the PlayStation as it synchs up the console and television for use that does not need extra controls or effort from the user.

The feature should have been with the PlayStation 5 in the beginning or straight from the factory, but there were no explanations from Sony as to why it was not included in its release. However, despite this, it is quite noting that this feature is here now, and it would be up and running whenever powering or depowering the console.

To enable HDMI Link, users would need to enable it manually via the PlayStation 5 console, but for some cases after the recent update, it was already functioning following the patch.

  • Open the PlayStation 5 and head to Settings
  • Go to System and Look for HDMI
  • Check the box for HDMI Link

The HDMI Link is a connection between the PS5 and Television when powering or turning off said devices. The link of both consoles is controlled by its users, made possible by its HDMI connection. Turning the TV on boots up the PlayStation 5, and turning it off would cause the console to enter "Rest Mode."

On the other hand, turning the PS5 on would turn the television on, and shutting the console down would cause the TV to power off. For this to work, users should keep the devices plugged in their power sources whenever ready to use to take advantage of the feature.
