Norway is once again breaking adoption records of electric vehicles, with 82% of new vehicles sold from January to March being battery-electric.

Tesla Model Y is currently leading the charge with many deliveries in Mar.

Norway Shows Record-Breaking Numbers in EVs Sold

Norway has been the leading market for electric vehicles in adoption per capita. As a lot of markets are introducing plans to ban traditional vehicles by 2030 or 2035, Norway is aiming for each new car on the road to be all-electric by 2025.

That is 10 years early compared to the usual target year, according to Reuters.

Around 64.5% of all vehicles sold in Norway in 2021 were all-electric. That is up 10 points from 2020.

The world's leading EV market is off to a great start in 2022 and just announced that it broke a new record in the first three months.

Norway's Road Traffic Information Council (OFV) announced 82.9% of all vehicles registered between Jan. and Mar. 2022 were all-electric.

According to the OFV, most people want an electric car, and the tread in 2022 is clearer than ever. In total, the number of first-time registered new passenger cars in the first quarter of 2022 decreased by 10.9% compared with the first quarter of 2021.

Of 32,342 new passenger cars in the first quarter of 2022, 26,800 are electric. This is a record-high share of 82.9%, according to Bloomberg.

That is a significant increase compared to Q1 2021 when 52% of new vehicle sales were all-electric. The sales of internal combustion engine vehicles are decreasing to just about 2,000 vehicles over the first three months of 2022.

They are on pace to be near zero before 2025. In Mar., electric vehicle market shares went up to 86%, led by Tesla with a 30% market share.

Some more recent newcomers are beginning to climb the ranking like the BMW iX, but the availability of some of those models is still a problem that is liming growth.

With just a few more electric models hitting the market and more availabilities of some of the most popular electric vehicle models as supply chain issues slow down, the country is expected to beat its goal of going 100% electric by 2025.

Norway's 2021 Electric Vehicle Sales

In December 2021, Electrek reported that Norway is showing that the all-electric car future is nearer than people think, as the country's car sales in 2021 have been impressive.

The sales of 2021 showed that 73.8% were all-electric vehicles, and the number increased to 94.9% when adding all vehicles with batteries.

Tesla was the leading automaker in terms of sales, as the best-selling and second best-selling electric vehicles in November 2021 were Model Y and Model 3 respectively.

Tesla Model Y sold 1,013 units while Tesla Model 3 sold 3,771 units.

Around 725 units of Volkswagen ID 4 were sold, 661 units of Audi Q4 e-tron, and 655 units of Nissan Leaf also made a list.

Tesla is often a difference-maker in the market because its volume comes by in the last three months of 2021. This means that December 2021 has shown even more EV sales in the country with a larger Model 3 and Model Y shipment.
