CNET reported that the recent court hearing between Microsoft and the FTC brought massive details about the next-generation consoles, as the Redmond giant claimed during its proceedings. As per Microsoft, the next-gen Xbox remains unnamed, and the speculated PlayStation 6 is expected within this decade, 2028.

It is important to note that the transition from the Xbox One to the Xbox Series S and X took as much as seven years, being that the former console was released in 2013 and the current one in 2020.

The same goes for the PlayStation from Sony, for its PS4 in 2013 and the PS5 during the first year of the pandemic.

Microsoft revealed this expected timeline as it presented its side on the prolific acquisition case where the FTC looks to block it to prevent monopolizing the industry.

Microsoft and the FTC Fiasco on Activision Blizzard Acquisition

The Microsoft and FTC fiasco recently erupted, and this was after other regulators like the UK and the European Union had already green-lit the company's acquisition of Activision Blizzard. According to IGN, their recent battle in court centers on preventing the breach of the anti-trust and monopolizing the gaming industry with the unification of the two companies.

For now, Microsoft is not yet in the clear for its acquisition despite seeing more than a year since its announcement.

The Modern Gaming Consoles in the World

There are two companies renowned for the console industry in the world, and these are Microsoft with its Xbox and Sony with its PlayStation. However, in the recent testimony of Microsoft, Nintendo is also a massive player in the market, with the company admitting its defeat to the Switch, saying that it already fell to third place in terms of sales.

Not only was 2020 a massive year for consoles, but it also presented a challenge for manufacturers to source its components. From the pandemic era to around late 2022, there were still several hardships in securing a stock of either the Xbox Series S and X, or the PlayStation 5.

That being said, it normalized almost one and a half years later for some, with those only beginning their gaming experiences later on.

Microsoft's latest-gen Xbox and the Sony PS5 are fairly new, and with the software company's recent claims, there is already a brewing expectation that the next console is on the horizon of this decade.

The Redmond-based company may have revealed this on their court claims, but it may be something to keep an eye on, come 2028.
