Apple faced a lawsuit in 2022 regarding allegations against the company for selling "faulty" keyboards on their MacBook computer lineup from 2015 to 2019. That specific keyboard is the infamous "butterfly" mechanism and design, with Apple agreeing to settle for as much as $50 million in November, instead of hashing out the entire case towards its end. 

Soon, victims of this MacBook problem may receive $50 to as much as $395 for receiving the allegedly, easily-broken keyboards from Cupertino.

Apple: MacBook Butterfly Keyboard Settlement

According to Law360, Apple's case stems a long time, especially with the initial production dates of the malfunctioning keyboards dating back to 2015. The company finally offered to settle for $50 million back in November and was subject to the judges' approval before they progress to the next stage and pay the victims. 

Now, the case sees its progression towards its payout to customers with the settlement soon commencing for all. People are eligible to receive from $50 to $395 for this case, depending on the repair they asked Apple to do on their computer. 

People are given until March 6 to fill out their details and claims on the keyboard settlement website to have them processed for verification.

How to Register to Receive Compensation

Affected users may signup here to bring their case to the officials to further identify and verify their eligibility for this compensation. 

It will only be available to users if they have a MacBook manufactured between 2015 to 2019, had its repair in an Apple Authorized Service Partner, and in states including California, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, or Washington.

Here are the tiers for the compensation for the butterfly keyboard:

• $50 - for keycap replacement only
• $125 - for the entire keyboard replacement
• $395 - for two or more keyboard replacements

Apple's Butterfly Keyboard

Users of previous MacBooks may be familiar with the notorious "butterfly keyboard," and this is because Apple boasted of this feature but eventually turned out to be a massive disappointment to all. Users were arguing that the butterfly keyboard was defective since its release, and people were already complaining since then.

Apple even gave out free repairs for the keyboards to fix the issue for users, and it temporarily fixed the issue before another problem occurred with faulty engineering. 

Many have pushed for the recall of these computers for Apple to fix the issue, and it did so after several years only.

For the longest time, an affected batch of computers from 2015 to 2019 have been suffering with their built-in keyboards on the MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro. Despite the fix, it still saw several problems that pester them up to this day, with the lawsuit now going beyond a band-aid solution from Apple to get people money to compensate for their problems.
