Mad Max the game has finally arrived, and along with it comes a launch trailer that helps set the stage for all the carnage to come.

At the beginning of the game, Max is stripped of his iconic interceptor. It is then up to players to craft a new driving machine capable of withstanding all the punishment the Wasteland can throw at it (which is a lot.) This new vehicle, dubbed the Magnum Opus by the peculiar mechanic Chumbucket you meet in the game's opening moments, must also be able to dish out punishment as well.

Thankfully developer Avalance Studios' have given players plenty of options in that department. Over the course of the game you'll perform shotgun drive-bys, ram enemy vehicles off the road, use a harpoon to rip hostile cars apart and toss flaming gas cans as bombs.

Max is no pushover when he's out of his car either. The game adopts a combat system that will instantly be familiar to anybody who has played the Batman: Arkham series or Shadow of Mordor. Mad Max borrows heavily from these games (each of the mentioned titles are published by Warner Bros., so perhaps this isn't surprising), but as the age-old saying goes, if it isn't broke, don't fix it.

As for the story, don't expect to see any recurring characters from the films. Avalanche has crafted a standalone Mad Max tale that is (mostly) separate from the film entries. You can see bits and pieces of the game's story in the launch trailer below, but needless to say it will be a tale of hardship, struggle and loss, as Max fights to find some manner of peace in a world gone mad.

Mad Max is out now on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. PlayStation 4 players will receive some timed exclusive hood ornaments that will be instantly familiar for long-time fans of the series. You can read about the size of the game's open world and the activities within it here.
