With Microsoft releasing Windows 10 as a free update to Windows users, it makes sense that the market share of Windows 10 would take off. Well, that's just what it has done, capturing more than five percent in less than one month, according to Net Applications.

That five percent represents a rather large 75 million computers, making Windows 10 the fastest-adopted operating system ever.

Of course, given the news that Windows 10 is doing so well, it makes sense that the operating system's predecessors would be slipping in market share. Windows 8 has slipped to 0.21 percent, while Windows 8.1 has fallen 1.71 points to 11.39 percent. Windows 8 and 8.1 combined own 13.95 percent of the market, dropping from the 15.96 percent from the end of July this year.

Despite the fact that Windows 10 is growing so fast, it's likely that Windows 7 will remain the most popular operating system, at least for this year. Windows 7 sits at 57.67 percent of the market, which is down from the 60 percent that it broke in June, but that still represents a massive lead over Windows 10.

As far as Windows Vista goes, the operating system continues to fall, now slipping to 1.82 percent, down from 0.02 percent. Windows 10 has essentially passed both Windows Vista and Windows 8 combined.

In general, Windows gained a market share of 0.18 percent in August, up to 90.84 percent. Apple's OS X and Linux both lost points, with OS X falling 0.13 points to 7.53 percent and Linux losing 0.05 points to 1.63 percent.

Net Applications gets its data by capturing 160 million unique visitors per month and monitoring 40,000 websites for clients. What this means is that it measures the user market share of its websites rather than market share as a whole, however, it's safe to assume that the user market share at least somewhat represents the market share as a whole.
