Apple's upcoming smartwatch, the Apple Watch Series 8, will come with a body temperature sensor. The said sensor can tell whether you are running a fever so that you can call a medical professional immediately.

So how does the body temperature sensor work?

Apple Watch Series 8's Body Temperature Sensor

According to Bloomberg, the body temperature sensor in the Apple Watch Series 8 can't give an exact reading. Still, it can detect a spike in body temperature, encouraging you to talk to a doctor or use a thermometer to get an accurate reading.

Even though the body temperature sensor still has to pass internal testing, Apple is expected to incorporate the feature in the Watch Series 8.

Aside from indicating your body temperature, the sensor could also be used for fertility tracking. According to The Wall Street Journal, changes in body temperature could help determine when someone is likely to get pregnant or predict when they will get their period.

How the Body Temperature Feature is Expected to Work

According to MacRumors, the body temperature feature works by calculating the difference between two probe ends. One end measures the heat of the surface it touches, while the other end is connected to a temperature sensor in the smartwatch.

The two ends of the probe will produce a voltage delta that can be correlated to a differential temperature measurement.

The tech giant may use a proprietary system from Rockley Photonics, a UK-based health technology startup that has created a sensor system designed for wearable devices that includes a core body temperature sensor.

What to Expect from the Watch Series 8

The Apple Watch Series 8 is expected to launch together with iPhone 14 models at the tech giant's Sept. 7 event. The expected shipping date for the wearable will be on Sept. 16.

The smartwatch's design has undergone minor changes over the years, and PhoneArena showed the new design for the Series 8.

Apple Watch Series 8 will feature a flat-edge design language found in most of Apple's lineup. It will also have a 5% size jump from the Series 7 display.

As for the colors, the standard Apple Watch Series 8 is coming in a new shade of red. The aluminum option is expected to be available in Starlight, Midnight, Silver, and Red, while the stainless steel frame will be available in Graphite and Silver.

The wearable is also expected to have a longer battery life than its predecessor, the Series 7.

Apple Watch Series 8 will also have the other features that the lineup is known for, such as a heart rate monitor, calories burned, sleep tracker, and workout schedules.

As for the price, the base model will start at $399. Upgrading the cellular model should add $100 to the $30 premium.

Pricing for different case materials like Titanium or Stainless Steel will be $699 and $799, respectively.
