A growing number of iPhone X owners have been running into a problem nicknamed the "incoming call" bug, where they experience delays in turning on for up to 10 seconds during incoming phone calls, thus preventing them from tapping "accept" or "decline" buttons.

The issue was first reported by Financial Times, which linked to several discussions posted in the Apple Support Communities. An Indian blog, PiunikaWeb, also rounded up complaints from users about a similar issue back in January, thought it appears owners have had this problem since the flagship launched back in November 2017.

Incoming Call Bug Affects Some iPhone X Units

According to the report, affected iPhone X units ring when an incoming call occurs, but its display does not fire up immediately or show the caller ID, accept and decline buttons, and other information typically displayed when somebody is calling. It takes 10 seconds for the screen to finally turn on — sometimes, it could take longer. The result? Missed calls that shouldn't have been missed.

Apple released the most recent update, iOS 11.2.5, late January, but the problems still appears to persist. Additionally, based on the reports, the incoming call affects iPhone X units running at least iOS 11.2, but earlier versions of iOS 11 might have the problem as well.

The Reports Are Few But Growing

For now, there are only a handful of posts regarding the issue on online forums, though the complaints on Twitter and Reddit are growing. At this point, it's unclear if the issue is hardware or software-based. One user said restoring the iPhone X erased the incoming call bug completely — for a few days only, that is, whereupon it reemerged. Another user said they had their phone replaced — but the replacement unit also had the bug.

The Financial Times said it's reached Apple for comment, and the Cupertino brand responded by saying it's currently "looking into these reports." It didn't offer any insight as to what might be causing the problem or when it will roll out a fix. Hopefully, the reports are just the result of a software issue, since hardware problems are much, much harder to remedy. Remember the iPhone 4 dropped calls fiasco? Neither Apple nor its customers ever want to go through that again.
